Christmas Festivities in York County including Fort Mill

On December 2, the campus community from Winthrop University came together on the lawn in front of Tillman Hall for the 87th annual lighting of the Christmas tree.
The lighting of the tree has been a beloved Winthrop tradition. It all started in 1935 when the Young Women’s Christians Association asked Mr LP Culp, the director of field facilities at the time, to settle on a Christmas tree for the field, and Mr Culp selected the Southern Magnolia tree you see currently.
It has become a massive tree, as we currently witness on campus. Every year, we estimate that around two hundred individuals gather on the front lawn. Of course, that is an estimate as a result of we are competitive with the Rock Hill parade, which is lined up in Oakland, however, we see community members, faculty/staff, alumni, and students all gather on the front field of the tree lighting every year. In recent years, the alumni association has begun streaming the event on the group’s Facebook page.
It is, therefore, superb to witness the number of alumni specifically being part of us around the world. A few years ago we had alumni be part of the streaming from France and Germany, and they were giving their vacation greetings on Facebook live. Therefore we were actually required to create this event online so you do not have to be present in Rock Hill. It is currently a virtual event that every one of our alumni and friends will enjoy virtually.
The annual Christmas Ville festival in Rock Hill was held Dec. 1-4 and included a parade, music, cuisine, horse and carriage rides, ice skating, and tonnes of lights.
A prominent feature of the celebration is a performance by the Winthrop RockHettes, which is named after the renowned Radio City Rockettes in New York.
Kelly Ozust, an assistant professor of dance, has worked as a choreographer for the group since she began teaching at Winthrop in 2014.
It is incredibly meaningful to her since it’s one of the only performance chances that they get in the department that actually goes out into the community. A lot of times they ask the community to attend things like the dance performances and our theatrical events, but with the RockHettes they are able to go. They don’t even do any performances in-house.
She said the group also performed at the Winthrop tree lighting and a Rock Hill retirement complex.
She believes it’s extremely essential that the department has a presence in the community, and it’s just really good to be a part of the Christmas portion of the community, because it’s fun and it brings joy to people, and she really enjoys it. Rachel Dawson, a new faculty member in the theatre and dance department, said she had a good time visiting Christmasville for the first time.

Many people attend the event year after year, but Nevaeh Woolins, a Winthrop senior, observed a change from previous years, which were impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak.
ChristmasVille has been a tradition for her since her freshman year at Winthrop, and with COVID, each ChristmasVille has been unique. It is being back to normal this year, it just brought back a lot of nostalgia to her.
It is truly one-of-a-kind. she had lived in a lot of locations, moved around a lot growing up and even as an adult and she had never lived someplace that has a Christmas event like this. And that’s cool because it draws the community together, but it’s also a very small town. It’s quaint and charming but in all the wonderful ways.
On December 1, the town of Fort Mill held its annual Christmas Village and Lighting of the Tree event at Fort Mill Amphitheater.
The celebration will include live music, refreshments, crafts, an illuminated trackless train, and a 50-foot Christmas tree, which will be lit at 6:08 p.m. It also attracted a lot of vendors who were selling their wares.

On December 3, the town also staged its 75th annual Christmas parade.
Lancaster
Last month, the Pleasant Dale Baptist Church in Lancaster held its second annual Fall Bazaar, which many people used to start their Christmas shopping.
According to Myran Jones, an event organizer, all the ladies and gentlemen come to simply get into the spirit of Christmas, fall, and winter, and… the main purpose is simply to meet people they haven’t seen in a long time.
They’ve been doing it for a number of years now. She and a couple of other church members are doing this to raise funds.
The festival drew local companies and offered a variety of homemade things for sale, including dog collars, home signs, key chains, jewellery, t-shirts, and culinary items.
Annabeth Allen, a church member, expressed her appreciation for the opportunity for people to see items that are not available at mainstream retailers such as Walmart or Target. It’s mostly handcrafted, and it’s visually appealing. Also beneficial to the fellowship is the opportunity to meet new people and reconnect with old friends.
